What is the Instructional Method?
While the Story-Driven Method is our gold standard for producing audience-focused Lifeology courses, this method can also be time consuming and is not always necessary for basic science and health explainers. This is why we developed the Instructional Method as an alternative.
We use the Instructional Method to create our Lifeology Instructional courses. Lifeology Instructionals are a “lite” version of Lifeology Original courses that still incorporate many science and health literacy best practices including plain language and actionable information. Lifeology Instructionals are typically short and sweet in scope. They might explain a basic scientific or health concept, or provide useful “how to” information on a health behavior or self-test along with an explanation of why it is important.
The Instructional Method is useful for creating Lifeology courses when the objective is to provide clear and universal messages on basic science and health topics relevant to a broad audience. For example, we are using the Instructional Method to create a library of courses that help people understand what clinical trials are and how they work. We’ve also used this method to create courses that explain what a CT scan is and what to expect when getting one, how to measure one’s blood pressure at home, how a specific medicine works and more.
The Instructional Method relies on existing curated and verified science and health knowledge. It also doesn’t involve the same research and attention to audience-specific questions, concerns, barriers and lived experiences that Lifeology Originals do. But for certain topics, the Instructional Method is the more efficient method for Lifeology course creation that doesn’t sacrifice content value.
Benefits of the
Instructional Method
- Courses are short and straightforward to create
- Produces highly accessible and understandable explainers or “how to’s” for any audience
- Relies on existing official or credible sources of information like the NIH, CDC, etc.
- A flexible creation process that incorporates collaboration when needed
- Can feature custom illustrations, stock photography or a mix
