Ana Maria Porras is featured in our Gage Scientists Who Inspire deck. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida. She is also a member of the Gage search platform.
As a biomedical engineer, Dr. Porras builds models of diseased tissues in the lab to study interactions between humans and microbes. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion, co-founding LatinxinBME, a community aiming to promote diversity in STEM by supporting Latinx biomedical engineering researchers.
On social media, Dr. Porras teaches about microbiology using crocheted microbes designed by her—just one of the many ways Dr. Porras shows her interest for science art and science communication. She is an advocate for multilingual science communication.
“My favorite thing is getting to mix everything I love all in one job—research, global health, art, communicating, teaching, and mentoring!” -Dr. Porras
